Saronsberg Shiraz 2022
Nestled at the foot of its namesake mountain in the Upper Breede River Valley, Saronsberg Cellar is a dynamic South African estate that has earned a reputation for producing expressive Shiraz with a strong sense of place. The Saronsberg Shiraz 2022 is made from dryland and trellised Shiraz vineyards planted across varied soils - from gravelly clay to decomposed shale - benefiting from cool nights that preserve vibrant aromatics and balanced acidity. Hand-harvested fruit undergoes meticulous sorting and fermentation with a mix of whole-berry and crushed components, followed by extended maturation in French oak that integrates oak spice and builds depth. The result is a wine that feels both refined and powerful, reflecting Tulbaghâs terroir with precision and energy.
Â
Colour: Deep, dark purple-black core with vibrant ruby edges - an immediate sign of concentration and freshness.
Â
Nose: Aromas of ripe blackberries and plums weave with subtle violet floral notes and spice, complemented by hints of fynbos and integrated oak that add complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Â
Palate: Full-bodied and layered, the palate offers concentrated red and black fruit flavours framed by fine-grained tannins, balanced acidity and spice nuances - cracked pepper, dark chocolate and gentle liquorice - that bring depth and poise.
Â
Finish: Persistent and structured, the finish echoes rich fruit and subtle spice with oak-derived warmth, leaving a long, refined aftertaste that invites further exploration.
- Food Pairing : The bold fruit and spicy depth of Saronsberg Shiraz 2022 make it an excellent match for robust dishes with savoury richness. Try it with slow-braaied beef short ribs or a pepper-crusted lamb shoulder, where the wineâs structured tannins and fruit intensity balance the juicy richness. Oven-roasted venison with juniper berry jus or grilled beef sirloin with smoked paprika butter also play off the spice and dark fruit profile beautifully. For a slightly lighter yet satisfying contrast, wild mushroom risotto with aged Parmesan underscores the wineâs earthy complexity while keeping the palate lively.
- Drink before: Best enjoyed now through 2032; firm tannins and layered fruit support medium- to long-term ageing.
