“It’s like Christmas morning every time a club pack arrives. Unpacking each bottle, examining the labels, putting on the neck tags ... I’m like a kid in a sweet store.”
—M O’Donoghue, Newlands
“I don’t know if you have access to just how long I’ve been a member of your wine club, but it’s many years. Many years of wonderful good wines. I’ve genuinely never had a bad wine...”
—Walter Passet, Blue Horizon Bay
Why Join a Wine Club?
started the Wine Club in 1986, long before the days you could buy wine online. Why? Let’s face it. Wine can be intimidating. It’s difficult to try new ones and be sure they are top quality. But, how best do you do this?
Colin Collard shares his thoughts on the best way to taste wine.
Founder of the Wine-of-the-Month Club, and one of our panel judges, Colin says that there are there are two ways to judge a wine: sighted and of course, blind.
Every Monday our judging panel of ten experts tastes and scores the wines blind. It’s our team’s preferred method, but why? Here Colin explains the difference.
In sighted tastings, a judge sees the bottle of a wine they are assessing. That is, they see the name and the producer. They look at the label. Consciously or unconsciously, they are influenced by the brand. They know how well known it is. They know who the winemaker is. They also know who owns the farm and finally they know how that wine has performed in the past. They know all this before they taste the wine.
