Welgegund Old Vine Cinsault 2025
Established in 1777, Welgegund Heritage Wines is a family-owned estate in Wellington, in South Africa's Western Cape. The farm's heritage vineyards and distinctive decomposed granite soils play an important role in shaping wines that express their origin with clarity and character. The Welgegund Old Vine Cinsault comes from a Certified Heritage Vineyard planted in 1974. These dryland bush vines produce naturally low yields, concentrating the character of the grapes while reflecting the challenges and rewards of Wellington's warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. Welgegund follows a minimal-intervention philosophy, allowing the quality of its old-vine fruit to guide the winemaking process. In the previous vintage, the grapes were hand-harvested and fermented using a combination of whole-cluster techniques and natural fermentation in open barrels. The wine was matured for 12 months before bottling without filtration. The result is a thoughtful expression of old-vine Cinsault, combining the heritage of the Cape's traditional vineyards with a restrained, fruit-focused approach to winemaking.
Colour: Deep purple with vibrant ruby tones, reflecting the concentrated fruit character associated with Welgegund's old-vine Cinsault.
Nose: Aromatic notes of mulberry and bramble berry lead the way, accompanied by hints of allspice and savoury spice. The combination gives the wine a dark-fruited character with an inviting, gently savoury edge.
Palate: The palate is soft and generous, with layers of dark berry fruit supported by silky tannins and enough structure to give the wine definition. Its medium-bodied style makes it approachable without sacrificing depth, while the natural fruit character remains at the centre of the experience.
Finish: A clean, lingering finish brings the dark fruit and gentle spice together, leaving a refined impression rather than an overpowering one.
- Food Pairing : Welgegund Old Vine Cinsault is a natural match for South African favourites such as grilled lamb chops, a springbok or ostrich fillet, and a relaxed weekend braai. Its supple tannins complement grilled meats without overwhelming them, while the dark berry fruit works particularly well with gently spiced dishes and a touch of sweetness from a fruit-based sauce. For a lighter alternative, try it with seared tuna or a mushroom risotto, where the wine's freshness and savoury character can complement the food without dominating it.
