Welgegund Jacks Journey 2021
Established in 1777, Welgegund Heritage Wines is a family-owned estate in Wellington, at the foot of the Hawequa Mountains in South Africa's Western Cape. The estate's heritage vineyards, decomposed granite soils and warm, dry summers provide favourable conditions for Rhône varieties such as Grenache Noir and Cinsault. Welgegund's approach centres on working with established vineyards and allowing the character of the fruit and its origin to guide the winemaking. The estate aims to create wines that respect traditional Cape winemaking heritage while expressing each vintage with clarity and minimal intervention. Jack's Journey 2021 brings together two varieties that complement one another naturally. Grenache Noir contributes fragrant red fruit and a supple texture, while Cinsault adds freshness, lively fruit and a savoury edge. The result is a distinctive Wellington red blend that favours fragrance, elegance and drinkability over sheer weight.
Colour: A youthful-looking ruby-red colour with light garnet tones at the rim.
Nose: An inviting bouquet of blackberries and sour cherries leads into aromatic notes of cloves, cardamom and warming spice. Subtle savoury hints add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Palate: Soft and refined, with layers of dark berry fruit and sour cherry supported by gentle, well-integrated tannins. The Grenache Noir brings supple fruit and fragrance, while the Cinsault contributes freshness and a lighter, more approachable structure. Hints of liquorice emerge as the wine opens in the glass.
Finish: A lingering, gently savoury finish with dark fruit, liquorice and a subtle earthy character. The tannins remain rounded, leaving the wine feeling smooth rather than heavy.
- Food Pairing : Welgegund Jack's Journey 2021 is well suited to roast pork belly, grilled lamb chops, ostrich fillet or a slow-cooked beef casserole. The wine's soft tannins and fresh red-fruit character complement savoury meats without overwhelming them, while the aromatic spice works particularly well with rosemary, thyme and gently spiced sauces. For a lighter option, serve it alongside a mushroom risotto or a board of mature cheeses and charcuterie. These pairings bring out the wine's savoury complexity while allowing its fruit and freshness to remain in focus.
