Vilafonte Series M 2023
Vilafonté is situated on the ancient soils of the Simonsberg foothills, on the border between Stellenbosch and Paarl. Founded through a partnership between South African and American wine pioneers, the estate combines a deep respect for terroir with a meticulous, research-driven approach to viticulture and winemaking. The estate's vineyards are planted on some of the oldest vineyard soils in the Cape, rich in decomposed granite and ancient alluvial deposits. These well-drained soils naturally limit vine vigour and help produce concentrated fruit with freshness and structure. Vilafonté has built its reputation on crafting Bordeaux-inspired blends that express both place and vintage, balancing New World fruit purity with Old World restraint and age-worthiness. Series M represents the estate's softer, more approachable interpretation of a Cape Bordeaux blend, while maintaining the precision, detail and longevity for which Vilafonté is known.
Colour: Deep ruby with a youthful crimson edge and excellent colour density.
Nose: Expressive aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and dark cherry lead the way, followed by layers of violets, cedar, cocoa powder, graphite and subtle baking spice from oak maturation.
Palate: The palate is generous yet composed, offering flavours of cassis, blackberry and black cherry supported by fine-grained tannins. Merlot contributes plush texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc provide structure and freshness. Hints of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and savoury spice add complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish: Long and persistent, finishing with dark berry fruit, gentle spice and a lingering mineral note that encourages another sip.
- Food Pairing : Vilafonté Series M 2023 is well suited to dishes with both richness and savoury depth. Try it with a flame-grilled rib-eye steak, Karoo lamb chops, slow-braised beef short ribs or a mushroom and lentil potjie. The wine's fine tannins and concentrated dark fruit comfortably handle grilled meats, while its freshness prevents richer dishes from feeling heavy. Mature hard cheeses such as aged Cheddar or Gouda also make excellent partners, bringing out the wine's savoury complexity and subtle oak spice.
