Vergelegen Reserve Chardonnay 2024
Founded in 1700, Vergelegen is one of South Africa’s historic wine estates, situated on the lower slopes of the Hottentots Holland mountain range near Somerset West, with False Bay just six kilometres away. This maritime influence helps create a relatively mild growing climate, while the estate’s varied elevations and unusually diverse soils give its wines a strong sense of place. The Vergelegen Reserve Chardonnay 2024 draws fruit from several vineyard sites, bringing together the different expressions of the estate. Granite soils contribute texture, shale from the Schaapenberg adds a more linear, mineral character, while alluvial soils contribute floral aromatics. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, with most of the Chardonnay whole-bunch pressed before barrel fermentation. Partial malolactic fermentation and selective bâtonnage add texture, while maturation in a range of barrels for 10 months allows the fruit and oak to integrate.
Colour: Bright lemon-yellow with a fresh green hue.
Nose: Fresh citrus leads the way, with lemon and subtle lime joined by delicate citrus blossom. Spice and a gentle note of buttered toast add depth without overwhelming the fruit.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with a creamy, textured feel from its barrel fermentation and maturation. Bright citrus flavours provide freshness, while gentle oak, spice and a fine mineral character add complexity. The acidity keeps the wine focused and prevents the richer texture from feeling heavy.
Finish: Long and clean, with lingering citrus, subtle toast and a lightly savoury mineral note.
- Food Pairing : The Vergelegen Reserve Chardonnay 2024 has enough freshness to work beautifully with grilled or roasted fish, while its creamy texture makes it a natural partner for chicken in a light cream sauce, roast chicken with crispy potatoes, or spaghetti carbonara. Its citrus acidity also cuts through richer seafood dishes such as West Coast prawns or creamy mussels, while the subtle oak and spice complement grilled or roasted flavours without overpowering them.
