Thistle and Weed Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc 2024
Thistle and Weed is the collaboration between viticulturist Etienne Terblanche and winemaker Stephanie Wiid, founded in 2015 with a focus on uncovering distinctive vineyard sites across the Cape. Rather than working from a single estate, they seek out exceptional old vineyards that express a strong sense of place. The Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc 2024 comes from a Paarl vineyard planted in 1961 on the rugged koffieklip soils of the Joostenberg area. The wine takes its name from the hardy âduwweltjieâ weed, whose thorny seed pods cling stubbornly to passing boots - a fitting symbol for a vineyard that has endured for more than six decades. Whole-bunch pressing, wild fermentation in older French oak barrels and extended lees ageing allow the fruit and site to remain at the forefront. The result is a Chenin Blanc that reflects both the richness of Paarl and Thistle and Weedâs thoughtful, minimal-intervention approach.
Colour: Bright straw gold with youthful clarity and a subtle golden hue.
Nose: Inviting aromas of citrus peel, white peach and ripe pear lead the way, followed by hints of pineapple, beeswax, dried herbs and a gentle savoury complexity from lees ageing.
Palate: Richly textured yet focused, the palate offers layers of peach, citrus and orchard fruit supported by lively acidity. The old-vine fruit brings depth and concentration without heaviness, while subtle oak influence adds texture rather than flavour. There is a pleasing tension between generosity and freshness.
Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering notes of citrus, stone fruit and a lightly saline, textured finish that encourages another sip.
- Food Pairing : The texture and concentration of the Thistle and Weed Duwweltjie Chenin Blanc 2024 make it a versatile partner at the table. It works particularly well with roast chicken, Cape Malay fish curry, grilled line fish with lemon butter, pork belly or creamy mushroom risotto. The wine's bright acidity refreshes richer dishes, while its depth and savoury character complement roasted and subtly spiced flavours without overwhelming them.
