Thelema Mountain Vineyards, a respected Stellenbosch-born producer known for expressive site-driven wines, established the Sutherland Vineyards project in the cool Elgin region to explore coastal-influenced viticulture. Located just a few kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean at moderate elevation, this cool-climate site offers slower ripening and crisp natural acidity - ideal conditions for elegant Chardonnay. With thoughtful vineyard practices and gentle oak integration in the cellar, Thelema’s Sutherland Chardonnay delivers clarity of fruit and refined texture that reflect this breezy terroir.
Colour: Pale straw with a hint of green sheen, suggesting freshness and youthful vibrancy.
Nose: Fresh citrus - lemon zest and grapefruit - mingles with ripe pear and subtle stone-fruit aromas, while a touch of creaminess and gentle French oak spice adds depth.
Palate: Medium-bodied with bright acidity and creamy texture; citrus and orchard fruit lift the profile, supported by light nutty and vanilla nuances from 10 months’ oak maturation.
Finish: Clean and refreshing, with lingering lemon-pear flavours and a refined, supple oak presence that doesn’t overwhelm the fruit.
