Survivor Pinotage Reserve 2022
Survivor Wines, originally developed by Overhex Wines International, is now under the custodianship of Van Loveren Family Vineyards - one of South Africa’s most established family-owned wine estates. This transition brings a renewed focus on vineyard expression while maintaining the brand’s core philosophy of showcasing distinctive sites across the Western Cape.
The Pinotage Reserve 2022 is sourced from Swartland, a region defined by dryland farming, low-yielding bush vines, and ancient granite and shale soils. These conditions naturally produce smaller berries with concentrated flavour and structure. Under Van Loveren’s guidance, the winemaking remains considered and restrained: careful fruit handling, minimal intervention, and thoughtful oak maturation to support - rather than mask - the vineyard character. The result is a Pinotage that feels both grounded in place and polished in style.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a youthful purple edge, indicating both concentration and freshness.
Nose:
Ripe red and black berries lead - think plum, blackberry and dark cherry - followed by subtle notes of spice, roasted coffee beans and a hint of smoky oak. There’s also a faint earthiness that reflects the Swartland origin.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with a smooth, rounded texture. The fruit profile leans towards dark berries and mulberry, supported by fine, structured tannins and balanced acidity. Oak influence adds gentle layers of vanilla and spice without overshadowing the fruit.
Finish:
Lingering and savoury, with a touch of spice and dark fruit tapering off cleanly.
- Food Pairing : The structure and ripe fruit profile of Survivor Pinotage Reserve 2022 make it a natural partner for flame-grilled and richly flavoured dishes. It works particularly well with a classic South African braai - think lamb chops or boerewors - where the wine’s tannins complement the charred, smoky flavours. It also pairs comfortably with sticky BBQ ribs, roasted aubergine, or a hearty beef burger, as the balance of fruit and acidity cuts through richness while echoing savoury notes on the palate.
