Snow Mountain Syrah 2023

Snow Mountain Wines was founded by winemaker James McKenzie with a vision to showcase the character of exceptional vineyard sites across the Western Cape. Based in Stellenbosch and sourcing grapes from carefully selected vineyards throughout the Coastal Region, the winery focuses on producing wines that reflect both varietal identity and a sense of place. The warm days and cooling maritime influences of the Coastal Region allow Syrah to develop ripe fruit flavours while retaining freshness and structure. The Snow Mountain Syrah 2023 was harvested at optimum ripeness before undergoing cold maceration, low-temperature fermentation and maturation in French oak barrels, adding depth without overshadowing the fruit. Colour: Deep ruby red with a youthful purple edge. Nose: Expressive aromas of blackberry, dark cherry and plum lead the way, followed by notes of cracked black pepper, sweet spice and subtle oak complexity. Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with layers of black fruit and dark cherry supported by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The fruit remains the focus, while hints of pepper, spice and savoury notes add complexity and structure. Oak maturation contributes texture rather than dominance, resulting in a balanced and approachable style. Finish: Lingering flavours of black fruit and dark cherries carry through to a gently spicy pepper finish that is characteristic of the varietal.
