Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2020
Cap Classique
Description
Simonsig Family Vineyards has played a defining role in South African sparkling wine history since Frans Malan produced the country’s first bottle-fermented Cap Classique in 1971. Situated in Stellenbosch, the estate combines traditional Champagne methods with the brighter fruit expression and freshness of the Cape winelands.
The Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2020 is the estate’s prestige Blanc de Blancs, made exclusively from Chardonnay grown on carefully selected vineyard sites. The fruit is hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed before primary fermentation in stainless steel to preserve purity and tension. The wine then spends a minimum of three years ageing on the lees during secondary fermentation in bottle, building texture, complexity and a fine, persistent mousse. The result is a Cap Classique that feels refined and focused, with freshness carrying through every layer.
Colour:
Pale straw gold with a fine, energetic stream of bubbles.
Nose:
Fresh lemon peel, green apple and pear lead the aromatics, followed by subtle brioche, roasted almonds and hints of marzipan. There is a clean mineral edge that keeps the wine lifted and precise.
Palate:
The Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2020 is finely textured with a lively mousse and bright acidity. Citrus and tart apple flavours sit alongside gentle biscuit and pastry notes from extended lees ageing. The Chardonnay-driven palate feels elegant rather than rich, with freshness and creamy texture working together seamlessly.
Finish:
Long, dry and refreshing, with lingering notes of lemon zest, toasted almond and delicate brioche complexity.

- Food Pairing : The freshness and fine mousse of Simonsig Cuvée Royale 2020 make it particularly versatile at the table. It works beautifully with fresh oysters, grilled prawns or smoked salmon, where the bright acidity cuts through richness while complementing delicate seafood flavours. Creamy mushroom risotto or parmesan-based dishes also pair well with the wine’s subtle brioche and almond notes, while soft goat’s cheese and aged hard cheeses bring out its savoury complexity without overwhelming its elegance.
