Savage Are We There Yet 2025
Savage Are We There Yet is made by Duncan Savage of Savage Wines from two parcels of bush-vine Syrah and Touriga Nacional on the Sijnn property near Malgas, along the Breede River. The wine's name is a playful reference to the long journey from Duncan Savage's urban cellar in Salt River to this remote vineyard. The Malgas site is particularly distinctive, with river pebbles and shale creating an exceptionally rocky, well-drained growing environment. The combination of rugged soils, dry-farmed bush vines and the warmer inland location produces fruit with concentration, while the influence of the Breede River and surrounding landscape helps retain freshness and savoury character. Savage's approach is deliberately restrained. Perfect bunches are spontaneously fermented in open-top fermenters, with a portion of the Syrah retained as whole bunches. After gentle extraction and basket pressing, the wine is matured in older 500-litre French oak barrels. This allows the Touriga Nacional and Syrah to retain their fruit and site character while gaining texture and complexity from time in oak.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a youthful purple hue.
Nose: Dark plum, blackberry and blueberry sit alongside red berry notes, violet, wild herbs and pepper. There is a savoury mineral quality in the background, with hints of fynbos and the subtle earthy character of the rocky Malgas site.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with concentrated plum, blackberry and blueberry fruit.
Fresh acidity gives the wine energy, while firm, crunchy tannins provide structure without making it feel heavy. Touriga Nacional contributes floral and dark-fruit character, while Syrah brings spice, savouriness and depth. A subtle saline quality adds another layer to the finish.
Finish: Long, dry and savoury, with dark fruit, pepper, herbs and a lingering mineral-saline character.
- Food Pairing : Savage Are We There Yet 2025 has the freshness and savoury structure to work especially well with richer, slow-cooked dishes. Try it with lamb stew, lamb curry, roast lamb, beef short ribs, venison or a hearty mushroom and lentil dish. The dark fruit complements roasted and braised meats, while the acidity and peppery, herbal character help cut through richer sauces and bring lift to spiced dishes.
