Rising Star Jerome Van Rooi Malbec (Diners)
Malbec
Description
The Rising Star Jerome van Rooi Malbec celebrates one of South Africa’s most promising young winemakers. Jerome van Rooi gained national recognition when he won the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year award in 2022 for his red wine work, highlighting his talent and growing influence in the Cape wine industry.
Produced from vineyards in the rugged Cederberg region, the wine reflects a unique high-altitude terroir. The Cederberg mountains sit far inland, where warm days are balanced by significantly cooler nights. This temperature contrast allows grapes to ripen fully while preserving acidity and aromatic intensity. Malbec has adapted well to these conditions, producing wines with deep colour, concentrated fruit and firm structure while still maintaining freshness.
The Rising Star range reflects a modern Cape approach to winemaking - expressive fruit, balanced structure and minimal interference so that the vineyard character remains central to the wine.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a dark purple core, showing good concentration in the glass.
Nose:
Aromas of blackberry, black plum and dark cherry lead the bouquet. Subtle notes of violet, cocoa and gentle spice add complexity.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with rich dark fruit at the core. Flavours of plum, blackberry and black cherry are supported by firm but polished tannins. Fresh acidity brings balance, preventing the wine from feeling overly heavy.
Finish:
Smooth and persistent, with lingering dark fruit and a soft savoury spice note.

- Food Pairing : The rich fruit and firm structure of Rising Star Jerome van Rooi Malbec make it well suited to flavourful dishes. It pairs particularly well with grilled steak, lamb chops or a classic South African braai, where the wine’s tannins balance the richness of the meat. Slow-cooked beef dishes such as oxtail or short ribs also work beautifully, as the wine’s dark fruit complements the savoury depth of the dish. For a lighter option, try it with mushroom risotto or mature cheddar, which highlights the wine’s subtle earthy undertones.
