Perdeberg Rex Equus Pioneers Blend 2019
Bordeaux Blend
Description
Perdeberg Wines, rooted at the base of the Paardeberg Mountain in Paarl, draws its character from dry-land vineyards where unirrigated vines produce small, concentrated berries with expressive flavour and structural depth. For its 80th anniversary, the cellar released Rex Equus Pioneer’s Blend 2019 - a limited-edition Bordeaux-style red that showcases not only Perdeberg’s heritage but also its mastery of site-specific fruit selection and careful barrel maturation. Grapes were hand-picked from prime blocks and matured for 18 months in 500-litre French oak barrels (half new), allowing oak nuance to integrate harmoniously with fruit purity. The result reflects the estate’s philosophy of crafting wines with both precision and personality, rooted in terroir-driven intensity rather than heavy oak influence.
Colour: Deep, dark ruby-purple in the glass, hinting at both richness and youthful vibrancy.
Nose: A layered bouquet of dark berries (blackcurrant and blackberry) with notes of dried spice, violet and subtle cedar-oak; a hint of olive leaf and herbal complexity adds intrigue.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with juicy dark fruit at the core - black plum and cassis - balanced by fresh acidity and fine, powdery tannins. Earthy herbal threads and a touch of tobacco pepper the mid-palate, while French oak lends spice and vanilla warmth without overpowering.
Finish: Long and polished, with lingering dark fruit and gentle savoury spice that underscore both balance and depth.

Perdeberg Rex Equus Pioneers Blend 2019
- Food Pairing : Perdeberg Rex Equus Pioneer’s Blend 2019 thrives with rich, flavour-forward fare that can stand up to its structure and layered profile. Try it with grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic, where the wine’s dark fruit and herbal nuances echo the savoury herb crust. A slow-roasted beef brisket with peppercorn jus also complements its medium-to-full body and structured tannins, while mushroom-and-blue-cheese tart brings out the blend’s earthy complexity and spice elements. The wine’s freshness and elegant oak integration keep the palate lively alongside richer proteins and savoury sauces.
