Neil Ellis Bottelary Pinotage 2020
Neil Ellis Wines has long championed the idea that exceptional wines begin in exceptional vineyards. Rather than focusing on a single estate, the winery seeks out distinctive sites across the Cape, matching grape varieties to locations where they perform best. The Bottelary Hills, situated north of Stellenbosch, have earned a reputation as one of South Africa's premier Pinotage-growing areas thanks to their decomposed granite soils, varied slopes and cooling maritime influence. The Neil Ellis Bottelary Pinotage 2020 is sourced from carefully selected bush vines rooted in these hillside vineyards. Hand-harvested fruit, gentle extraction and maturation in French oak barrels allow the wine to express both the richness associated with Pinotage and the elegance for which Neil Ellis wines are known. The result is a thoughtful interpretation of South Africa's signature variety, combining concentration with freshness and structure.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a dense core and youthful garnet rim.
Nose: Expressive aromas of black cherry, plum and blackberry are layered with notes of cocoa, cedar, dried herbs and subtle baking spice. As the wine opens, hints of graphite and earthy complexity emerge.
Palate: Rich yet composed, with concentrated dark berry fruit supported by fine, chalky tannins. The texture is smooth and polished, while fresh acidity provides lift and balance. Well-integrated French oak contributes notes of dark chocolate, spice and roasted coffee without dominating the fruit.
Finish: Long and savoury, with lingering black fruit, gentle spice and a refined mineral character that reflects the Bottelary Hills terroir.
- Food Pairing : The Neil Ellis Bottelary Pinotage 2020 is particularly well suited to hearty South African fare. Its ripe fruit and structured tannins pair beautifully with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, beef short ribs, venison pie and flame-grilled steak. The wine's savoury complexity also complements mushroom risotto and mature hard cheeses. The freshness on the palate helps balance richer dishes, while the depth of fruit stands up comfortably to robust flavours from the braai or winter table.
