Morgenster Vermentino 2023
Vermentino
Description
Morgenster is set on the lower slopes of the Helderberg in Somerset West, where vines benefit from cooling breezes off False Bay and decomposed granite soils – conditions that favour bright acidity and clear, saline-lined fruit. Best known for its Bordeaux-style reds and olive oils, the estate has also embraced Mediterranean varieties that suit this coastal site. Vermentino fits that philosophy neatly: it’s picked to retain energy and lift, then handled gently in the cellar, usually fermented cool in stainless steel with time on fine lees rather than overt oak. The result is a dry, textural white that feels distinctly coastal and food-driven – New World clarity of fruit with a quietly Old World, Italian accent.
Colour:
Pale straw with a green tinge, bright and crystal-clear in the glass, suggesting a young, zesty white.
Nose:
Lemon and lime lead, backed by green apple and a touch of white peach. Subtle notes of fennel, fresh herbs and a light saline or “sea breeze” character add a Mediterranean feel, with a hint of wet stone in the background.
Palate:
Light to medium-bodied with lively, mouth-watering acidity and a gentle, rounded mid-palate from lees contact. Citrus flavours – lemon, grapefruit and a twist of lime zest – are joined by green apple and a whisper of stone fruit. There’s a fine, almost chalky texture that keeps the wine feeling dry and savoury rather than overtly fruity. Overall, it’s clean, focussed and very drinkable, built more for the table than for sipping on its own.
Finish:
Medium in length, with lingering lemon zest, a hint of herbal bitterness and a distinct, salty-mineral snap.

Morgenster Vermentino 2023
- Food Pairing : Morgenster Vermentino 2023’s bright acidity and subtle savoury edge make it a natural match for seafood and simple, olive-oil-based dishes. It’s excellent with line fish or hake on the braai with lemon, garlic and herbs, where the citrus and coastal notes in the wine echo the flavours on the plate. It works just as well with grilled calamari, West Coast mussels in a white wine and fennel broth, or a classic tomato, olive and caper pasta. For lighter meals, think Greek salad with feta, roast chicken with lemon and rosemary, or a platter of olives, hummus and grilled vegetables – the wine’s freshness and gentle texture keep everything tasting clean and moreish.
