Mont Rochelle Miko Red 2023
Mont Rochelle Miko Red 2023 is produced by Mont Rochelle Mountain Vineyards, overlooking the Franschhoek Valley in the Western Cape. Surrounded by the mountains of the Cape Winelands, the estate benefits from varied elevations and vineyard aspects that help shape the character of its grapes. The Franschhoek region's warm days and cooler mountain influences provide favourable conditions for developing ripe fruit while retaining freshness. The Miko range is made in honour of the late Miko Rwayitare and is reserved for selected vintages when the estate considers the quality suitable. The approach places emphasis on expressing the vineyard's character, with careful fruit selection and measured cellar intervention. This Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc blend brings together the darker fruit and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc's aromatic lift and fresh herbal character. Oak maturation contributes additional depth and complexity, while the combination of varieties gives the wine both concentration and elegance.
Colour: Deep ruby red with youthful, dark hues.
Nose: Blackcurrant and ripe dark berries lead, accompanied by fresher red fruit and delicate floral, perfumed notes. A subtle pencil-shaving character adds a savoury dimension, bringing complexity to the fruit.
Palate: Full-bodied and layered, with concentrated blackcurrant and dark fruit flavours complemented by vibrant red berries. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides depth and structure, while Cabernet Franc contributes freshness and aromatic complexity. The tannins are finely integrated and velvety in texture, giving the wine a polished feel without sacrificing its structure.
Finish: Long and rounded, with lingering dark fruit, fragrant red berries and subtle savoury notes. The layered finish combines richness with freshness and leaves a refined, lingering impression.
- Food Pairing : Mont Rochelle Miko Red 2023 is a natural partner for grilled beef fillet, roast leg of lamb, slow-cooked beef short ribs or venison. Its firm structure and concentrated dark fruit complement the savoury richness of red meat, while the Cabernet Franc component adds freshness and herbal notes that work particularly well with rosemary, thyme and black pepper. For a meat-free option, try it with a mushroom and lentil pie or grilled portobello mushrooms with herbs. Serve with roasted vegetables and a rich pan sauce to bring out the wine's depth and layered finish.
