Few South African wines have the heritage and reputation of Meerlust Rubicon. Meerlust Estate, in Stellenbosch, lies close to False Bay and draws fruit for Rubicon from four distinctive estate terroirs, each contributing something different to the final blend. The combination of Stellenbosch's maritime influence, varied soils and carefully managed vineyards helps give the wine its characteristic combination of ripe dark fruit, freshness and structure. Rubicon was created in 1980 following Hannes Myburgh's experience in Bordeaux, and has become one of South Africa's best-known Bordeaux-style blends. The 2022 vintage combines Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Each parcel was fermented separately before malolactic fermentation in 300-litre barrels; the components then spent eight months in barrel before blending, followed by a further ten months of maturation to allow the wine to harmonise. The 2022 growing season included good winter rainfall, a warm and dry ripening period and a later harvest, allowing extended hang time and picking at good levels of ripeness. The resulting Meerlust Rubicon 2022 has plenty of concentration but retains freshness and fine tannin structure.
Colour: Deep, youthful ruby red with impressive concentration.
Nose: Fragrant and layered, with ripe black plum, blackberry and cassis at the forefront. Violet, cedar wood, earth, bouquet garni and subtle potpourri spice add complexity, with a gentle graphite-like savouriness emerging underneath.
Palate: Full-bodied and generous, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours and a plush, rounded texture. Ripe plum and blackberry are supported by finely integrated oak, supple tannins and refreshing acidity. There is enough structure to give the wine definition without making it feel austere, while the Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone and Merlot adds softness and breadth.
Finish: Long and gently savoury, with dark fruit, cedar and spice lingering alongside polished tannins and a pleasing mineral freshness.
- Food Pairing : Meerlust Rubicon 2022 has the weight, ripe fruit and rounded tannins to work particularly well with richer meat dishes. Try it alongside a slow-roasted Karoo lamb shoulder, grilled or pepper-crusted beef fillet, beef short ribs, venison or a hearty mushroom and lentil dish. The wine's tannins are well suited to protein-rich foods, while its acidity and savoury notes help cut through richer sauces and roasted flavours. For a classic South African pairing, a rosemary-and-garlic lamb roast would be an especially natural match.
