Meerlust Red 2023
Meerlust Estate is one of Stellenbosch's historic wine estates, with the Myburgh family tradition at the property dating back to 1693. Situated on the Stellenbosch side of the Helderberg, the estate benefits from a maritime influence and a combination of distinctive vineyard terroirs. Its proximity to False Bay helps moderate temperatures, while the estate's varied soils and aspects contribute different elements of fruit, freshness and structure to its wines. The Meerlust Estate Red is made by Meerlust Estate and is considered the estate's second-label red, historically produced when components did not meet the selection requirements for Rubicon. Since 2020, it has become a permanent part of the range, also providing a home for fruit from younger vineyards. The 2023 blend comprises Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with each parcel fermented separately before malolactic fermentation in 300-litre barrels and large foudres. After eight months in oak, the components were blended and returned to barrel for another eight months to harmonise before bottling.
Colour: Youthful ruby red with a garnet-red hue.
Nose: Fresh redcurrant, cranberry and black cherry lead the nose, with field herbs and cedar spice adding a savoury layer of complexity. Subtle oak sits in the background rather than dominating the fruit.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with bright red and darker berry fruit supported by fresh acidity and firm but rounded tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and concentration, while Cabernet Franc brings herbal freshness and Merlot adds softness to the blend. The oak contributes gentle spice and depth, leaving the fruit at the centre of the wine.
Finish: Long, fresh and savoury, with lingering red fruit, cedar spice and fine tannins.
- Food Pairing : The Meerlust Estate Red 2023 has the freshness and tannin structure to work particularly well with grilled steak, gourmet burgers, lamb chops and roast chicken with herbs. Its red-fruit character and gentle cedar spice also suit tomato-based pasta dishes, while the savoury freshness makes it a good match for simply prepared red meats without overwhelming the food. The estate specifically recommends gourmet burgers, light red meats and tomato-based pasta dishes.
