Marklew Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Marklew Wines is a small, family-run estate situated on the slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s most respected regions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The proximity to False Bay brings cooling sea breezes that temper the warm climate, allowing for slower ripening and more structured, balanced wines. The vineyards are rooted in decomposed granite soils, which help to naturally limit vigour and concentrate flavour.
Marklew’s approach leans toward a classic Stellenbosch style - structured yet approachable - with careful vineyard management and considered oak ageing to support, rather than dominate, the fruit. The focus remains on clarity of varietal expression and consistency.
Colour:
Deep ruby with a garnet edge, showing youthful concentration.
Nose:
Blackcurrant and dark plum lead, followed by hints of cedar, pencil shavings, and a subtle herbal note typical of Cabernet Sauvignon. Gentle oak spice adds depth without overpowering the fruit.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with firm, well-structured tannins. The dark fruit profile carries through, supported by notes of tobacco and a touch of graphite. Acidity keeps the wine fresh, giving it a composed, balanced feel rather than heaviness.
Finish:
Dry and moderately long, with lingering cassis, spice, and a savoury edge.

Marklew Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
- Food Pairing : The structure and tannin profile of Marklew Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 make it a natural partner for richer, protein-led dishes. It pairs well with a grilled ribeye or sirloin, where the tannins soften against the meat’s fat. A slow-cooked lamb shank or rosemary-infused roast lamb complements the wine’s herbal and savoury notes, while a classic South African braai with boerewors and flame-grilled steaks echoes its subtle smoky undertones. For a non-meat option, a mushroom and lentil stew offers enough depth and earthiness to match the wine’s structure.
