L'Ormarins Private Cuvée 2017 is produced by the L'Ormarins division of Anthonij Rupert Wines, drawing predominantly on fruit from the isolated Elandskloof valley near Villiersdorp. Surrounded by mountains and characterised by a distinctly cool climate, Elandskloof is one of South Africa's most important sites for premium sparkling wine production. The combination of decomposed shale soils, high altitude and slow ripening conditions allows Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to retain exceptional natural acidity while developing flavour complexity. This flagship Cap Classique spent an extraordinary 93 months on the lees before disgorgement, allowing it to develop remarkable depth, texture and finesse. Crafted in the traditional method, it reflects a philosophy of patience and precision, resulting in a wine that balances freshness, complexity and elegance in equal measure.
Colour: Brilliant pale gold with a persistent stream of exceptionally fine bubbles and a lively mousse.
Nose: Complex aromas of citrus zest, lemon peel and green apple are layered with sourdough bread, brioche and delicate maritime notes reminiscent of sea breeze and oyster shell. Extended lees ageing contributes additional depth and sophistication.
Palate: Focused and energetic on entry, showing vibrant citrus fruit, lemon sherbet freshness and saline minerality. The fine mousse carries flavours of toasted brioche, baked bread and subtle nuttiness derived from nearly eight years on the lees. Despite its richness and texture, the wine remains taut, dry and beautifully structured.
Finish: Long, precise and layered, with lingering citrus, oyster-shell minerality and refined autolytic complexity that persists well beyond the final sip.
