L'Ormarins Cape Vintage Reserve 2022
Produced by L'Ormarins, part of the Anthonij Rupert Wyne portfolio in Franschhoek, the Cape Vintage Reserve 2022 draws inspiration from the great fortified wines of Portugal while expressing a distinctly South African identity. The grapes are sourced from estate vineyards planted on decomposed granite soils on north-west-facing slopes in the Franschhoek Valley, where warm days and favourable growing conditions allow for full flavour development and concentration. The wine is crafted from hand-picked Touriga Nacional and Souzão grapes, fermented in stainless steel before being fortified with estate-distilled spirit produced from Ugni Blanc grapes in the estate's alembic still. Ageing for 22 months in older red wine barrels allows the wine to gain depth and texture while preserving fruit purity. The result is a refined fortified wine that balances richness, freshness and structure.
Colour: Deep ruby-black with an inky, concentrated appearance that hints at the wine's richness and intensity.
Nose: A complex bouquet of plum compote, ripe cherry and sweet spice is complemented by notes of raisins, dried fruit and delicate floral undertones. Layers of nuttiness and oak-derived complexity add further intrigue.
Palate: Full-bodied and luxurious, showing flavours of chocolate-covered raisins, stewed plum, dried cherries and warming spice. The sweetness is generous but carefully balanced by spirit, tannin and freshness, creating a wine of impressive harmony and poise. Time in barrel contributes subtle nutty nuances and textural depth.
Finish: Long, warming and persistent, with lingering notes of spice, dried fruit and toasted nuts carried by a pleasantly dry, structured finish.
- Food Pairing : L'Ormarins Cape Vintage Reserve 2022 is a natural partner for mature blue cheese, aged cheddar and rich chocolate desserts. The wine's sweetness and concentration work beautifully with dark chocolate fondant, fruitcake and nut-based desserts, while its tannic structure and freshness prevent pairings from becoming overly rich. It is equally rewarding served after dinner alongside roasted nuts or enjoyed on its own as a contemplative fireside wine.
