Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Cabernet Sauvignon
Description
Le Riche Wines has long been regarded as one of the Cape’s specialists in Cabernet Sauvignon, with a singular focus on producing refined, age-worthy expressions of the varietal. Founded by Etienne Le Riche and now led by his son Christo, the Stellenbosch estate sources fruit from some of the region’s most respected Cabernet sites to craft wines that reflect both place and precision.
The Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 represents the flagship of the range and is only produced when vineyard parcels meet the estate’s highest standards. Fruit is sourced from a selection of premium Stellenbosch wards - primarily Helderberg, Simonsberg and Jonkershoek Valley - where decomposed granite soils, varied elevations and maritime influence from False Bay create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grapes are hand-selected from older, lower-yielding vines and vinified in small batches before maturation in French oak barrels for around 24 months, with a significant proportion of new oak to support structure and longevity. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered and matured further before release, emphasising both purity and ageing potential.
Colour:
Deep garnet with intense concentration and youthful depth in the glass.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of cassis, black cherry and ripe plum lead the bouquet, followed by violets, graphite, cedar and subtle oak spice.
Palate:
Full-bodied yet finely structured, with dense blackcurrant and dark berry fruit supported by fresh acidity and polished, fine-grained tannins. Layers of cocoa, pencil shavings and savoury spice add complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish:
Long and persistent, leaving lingering notes of cassis, cedar and dark chocolate with a firm yet elegant tannin frame.

- Food Pairing : The depth and structure of Le Riche Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 make it particularly suited to richly flavoured dishes. It pairs beautifully with chargrilled beef fillet or ribeye, where the wine’s firm tannins and cassis fruit complement the savoury intensity of the meat. A slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary also works well, as the wine’s acidity lifts the richness of the dish. For something more rustic, try it with a beef short-rib potjie or slow-braised oxtail, where the wine’s layered fruit and savoury notes echo the depth of the cooking. Mature cheeses such as aged Cheddar or Comté can also highlight the wine’s cedar and dark chocolate undertones.
