La Vierge Storyteller Pinot Noir 2024
La Vierge is situated high in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge near Hermanus, within the Walker Bay appellation. The vineyards are close to the Atlantic Ocean and benefit from cool southerly sea breezes, regular sea mist and relatively even temperatures. The combination of maritime influence, elevation and the area's shale-based soils creates the sort of slow, steady ripening conditions in which Pinot Noir can retain freshness while developing delicate red-fruit and savoury complexity. The Storyteller range is inspired by the stories and travels of La Vierge founder Peter Clarke, with each wine linked to a particular fable. The Pinot Noir is represented by “The Fairy & The Crocodile - A Tale of Eternal Love”. In the cellar, the wine is treated with a relatively light touch: the Pinot Noir is hand harvested, cold-soaked before spontaneous fermentation, and matured in older French oak barrels.
Colour: Bright ruby red with a youthful crimson-purple edge.
Nose: Fresh red cherry and wild strawberry lead, followed by raspberry, violets and delicate floral perfume. Subtle spice, forest floor and earthy notes add complexity, with a gentle savoury character emerging underneath the fruit. These characteristics are consistent with La Vierge's published profile for the Story Teller Pinot Noir.
Palate: Silky and medium-bodied, with juicy red-cherry and wild-strawberry flavours supported by fresh acidity and soft, integrated tannins. There is a pleasing savoury and earthy depth beneath the fruit, with subtle spice and a gentle mineral character adding definition. The overall impression is elegant rather than weighty.
Finish: Long and graceful, with red berries, gentle spice and a lingering forest-floor earthiness.
- Food Pairing : La Vierge Story Teller Pinot Noir 2024 is particularly good with dishes that favour finesse rather than heavy sauces. Try it with roast duck, herb-roasted chicken, grilled salmon, lamb, mushroom risotto or a mushroom-based pasta. Its fresh acidity and soft tannins work especially well with earthy ingredients, while the red-fruit and subtle forest-floor character complements roasted poultry, mushrooms and lightly seasoned meats.
