Jordan Sophia 2020
Produced by Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch Kloof, Jordan Sophia 2020 reflects one of Stellenbosch's most distinctive growing environments. The estate's vineyards benefit from cooling maritime influences from both False Bay and the Atlantic coast, creating a longer ripening season that encourages flavour development while preserving freshness. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vineyards are planted on decomposed granite soils along elevated slopes overlooking Table Mountain and False Bay, producing fruit with structure, concentration and finesse. Jordan's winemaking philosophy balances classic Bordeaux-inspired techniques with a modern understanding of site and terroir. Sophia represents the estate's flagship Bordeaux blend, crafted from selected barrels and matured for 18 months in French oak to build complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
Colour: Deep garnet with a rich ruby core and excellent colour concentration.
Nose: Layers of black cherry, cassis and ripe blackberry lead the aromatics, followed by notes of dark chocolate, cedar, vanilla pod and subtle baking spice. As the wine opens, savoury nuances and floral hints emerge.
Palate: Full-bodied and structured, with generous dark berry fruit supported by finely textured tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon provides backbone and freshness, while Merlot contributes plush texture and depth. Cabernet Franc adds aromatic lift and complexity. Oak is integrated, bringing notes of spice and cocoa without dominating the fruit.
Finish: Long and composed, with lingering cassis, dark chocolate and savoury spice framed by persistent, polished tannins.
- Food Pairing : Jordan Sophia 2020 is particularly well suited to slow-roasted lamb shoulder, grilled rib-eye steak, beef fillet with mushroom sauce, venison pie or mature hard cheeses. The wine's firm tannin structure and concentrated fruit allow it to stand comfortably alongside rich red meats, while its freshness prevents the pairing from becoming heavy. The subtle oak spice and dark-fruit character also complement earthy flavours such as mushrooms, rosemary and roasted root vegetables.
