Jordan Long Fuse Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Jordan Wine Estate is situated in the Stellenbosch Kloof, a naturally cooler pocket of Stellenbosch influenced by maritime breezes from both False Bay and the Atlantic coast. These cooling influences help preserve freshness and structure while allowing grapes to ripen fully, creating wines with clarity, balance and site expression. The Long Fuse Cabernet Sauvignon takes its name from a remarkable vineyard preparation project. Large underground granite boulders were blasted to create ideal growing conditions for the vines, with one particularly stubborn boulder requiring more than 300 charges and an exceptionally long fuse. The wine is sourced from mature Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards planted on Glenrosa and Hutton soils on west- and north-facing slopes. Careful fermentation, extended skin contact and 18 months of maturation in French oak barrels contribute depth and structure while maintaining the elegance that has become a hallmark of Jordan's wines.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a vibrant garnet edge, showing youthful concentration in the glass.
Nose: A layered bouquet of blackcurrant, cassis and ripe blackberry leads the aromatics, followed by cedarwood, toasted tobacco, graphite and subtle hints of dried herbs. As the wine opens, notes of dark chocolate and spice emerge.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied with concentrated dark berry fruit at its core. Blackcurrant, plum and bramble flavours are supported by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. The French oak is well integrated, adding subtle cedar and spice notes without dominating the fruit. The texture is structured yet polished, reflecting the cooler Stellenbosch growing conditions.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering cassis, tobacco leaf, cedar and savoury spice notes carried by firm but refined tannins.
- Food Pairing : Jordan Long Fuse Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye steak, slow-roasted lamb shoulder, beef short ribs and hearty mushroom dishes. The wine's firm tannin structure and concentrated fruit complement richly flavoured meats, while its freshness and savoury character prevent heavier dishes from feeling overwhelming. Mature hard cheeses such as aged Cheddar or Gouda also work particularly well, bringing out the wine's cedar, tobacco and dark fruit nuances.
