Jordan Cobblers Hill 2024
Jordan Cobblers Hill 2024 is produced by Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch Kloof, a distinctive part of the Stellenbosch wine region where elevation, varied vineyard aspects and cooling maritime influences help shape structured, expressive red wines. Cobblers Hill is a limited-release Bordeaux-style blend that honours the Jordan family's heritage as master cobblers. The vineyard's west-facing slopes sit approximately 220 metres above sea level, with deep, well-drained soils formed from decomposed granite and sandstone. Gravelly topsoil and clay-rich subsoils help regulate vine growth and water availability, while the cooler influences of the surrounding landscape encourage gradual ripening. The blend brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, combining the dark fruit and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot's depth and Cabernet Franc's aromatic, savoury character. French oak maturation adds texture, spice and complexity, while the focus remains on expressing the vineyard's distinctive Stellenbosch Kloof origin.
Colour: Deep ruby red with an intense, youthful appearance.
Nose: Ripe blackcurrant and dark cherry aromas lead, accompanied by hints of menthol and fresh herbs. With time in the glass, subtle notes of dark chocolate, mocha and sweet spice add further complexity.
Palate: Full-bodied and richly layered, with concentrated dark fruit flavours supported by firm, well-defined tannins. Blackcurrant and ripe cherry are complemented by savoury herbal notes and a touch of spice. The oak influence adds depth and texture, while the wine's structure gives it the potential to develop additional complexity with careful cellaring.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering cherry, sweet spice and mocha notes. The firm tannins provide a structured close, giving the wine a composed, age-worthy character.
- Food Pairing : Jordan Cobblers Hill 2024 is a natural match for grilled beef fillet, slow-roasted lamb, venison or a rich oxtail stew. Its firm tannins work particularly well with protein-rich red meat, while the dark fruit and spice complement the caramelised flavours of the grill and the savoury depth of slow-cooked dishes. For a meat-free pairing, try it with a mushroom and lentil pie or grilled portobello mushrooms with herbs, which echo the wine's earthy complexity. Serve alongside roasted root vegetables for a satisfying meal that brings out the wine's generous fruit and structured finish.
- Drink before: Cellaring potential: A premium Bordeaux-style blend with the structure to develop in bottle. For planning purposes, consider drinking from around 2028 onwards and potentially cellaring into the mid-2030s under suitable conditions.
