Joostenberg Die Agteros Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2025
The Joostenberg Estate Die Agteros Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2025 comes from the oldest vineyard on Joostenberg Estate, a parcel planted in 1982 on decomposed granite and shale soils in the south-western reaches of Paarl. Cooling maritime influences help preserve freshness while the mature vines naturally produce low yields and concentrated fruit. Owned by the Myburgh family since 1879, Joostenberg Estate has become one of South Africa's leading organic wine farms. The name "Die Agteros" comes from the Afrikaans saying "Agteros kom ook in die kraal", a reminder that patience and perseverance are often rewarded. For many years, fruit from this vineyard disappeared into blends, but as the vines matured, their unique character became impossible to ignore. Today, the vineyard produces one of the estate's most distinctive wines. Hand-harvested grapes, whole-bunch pressing, natural fermentation and extended lees ageing allow the vineyard's character to take centre stage.
Colour: Bright straw gold with youthful clarity and subtle green-gold highlights.
Nose: A layered aromatic profile of baked apple, quince, pear and citrus peel, followed by notes of honey, wet stone, seashells and gentle floral nuances.
Palate: Textured and concentrated without feeling heavy. Ripe orchard fruit flavours are supported by vibrant acidity and a fine mineral thread. Lees ageing contributes a subtle creaminess, while the old vines bring depth and intensity. The wine combines richness with precision, remaining focused and energetic throughout.
Finish: Long, dry and savoury, with lingering notes of baked apple, honeyed citrus and flinty minerality.
- Food Pairing : The Joostenberg Die Agteros Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2025 pairs beautifully with grilled line fish, roast chicken, pork belly, creamy mushroom risotto and seafood dishes featuring butter or citrus-based sauces. The wine's combination of texture and freshness allows it to handle richer flavours while its vibrant acidity keeps the palate refreshed. Its subtle savoury and mineral notes also make it an excellent match for Cape Malay-inspired dishes and mature hard cheeses, where the wine's depth complements rather than overwhelms the food.
