HPF Arnoldus 2021
Bordeaux Blend
Description
HPF (Hermanuspietersfontein) is based in the Hemel-en-Aarde area near Hermanus, but its most distinctive wines come from Sondagskloof - a cool, coastal ward not far from Cape Agulhas. This is one of South Africa’s more marginal growing areas, where ocean winds and lower temperatures slow ripening, allowing for greater detail, structure, and natural acidity in the wines.
The HPF Arnoldus 2021 is the estate’s flagship Bordeaux-style blend, built around classic varieties that thrive in this cooler environment. The soils are well-drained and contribute to the wine’s firm structure, while the climate ensures freshness and restraint rather than excessive ripeness.
Winemaking is deliberate and patient. The blend is assembled before maturation and aged for around 24 months in new French oak, followed by extended bottle ageing prior to release. This long élevage allows the wine to integrate fully, resulting in a style that emphasises depth, polish, and longevity rather than immediate approachability.
Colour:
Deep ruby to garnet, with a dense, almost opaque core.
Nose:
Plum and blackcurrant lead, followed by dark cherry and subtle black olive. Layers of fynbos, cedar, and spice add a distinctly Cape character.
Palate:
Full-bodied with a structured, tightly woven core. Dark fruit is supported by firm, fine-grained tannins and well-integrated oak. There is both power and restraint here, with freshness from the cool climate balancing the wine’s depth.
Finish:
Long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, savoury spice, and a subtle herbal edge.

HPF Arnoldus 2021
- Food Pairing : HPF Arnoldus 2021 is best paired with rich, structured dishes that match its intensity. Slow-cooked lamb shoulder or a classic Karoo lamb roast works particularly well, as the wine’s tannins soften alongside the meat’s richness. A grilled ribeye or beef short ribs will highlight its dark fruit and savoury depth, while venison or game dishes complement the herbal, fynbos notes. For a local touch, a well-prepared braai with aged steak or lamb chops brings out both the wine’s structure and its layered complexity.
