Located on the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, Hartenberg Wine Estate is one of South Africa’s longstanding family-owned wine estates, with a reputation for producing structured, age-worthy reds. The estate’s vineyards benefit from varied elevations, decomposed granite soils, and cooling maritime influence, creating conditions well suited to Bordeaux varieties.
The Mackenzie is named after the Mackenzie family, who played a significant role in shaping Hartenberg’s modern identity. Produced only in select vintages, the wine reflects the estate’s more classical approach to red winemaking - favouring detail, structure, and longevity over overt richness. Careful oak maturation and restrained extraction allow the fruit and vineyard character to remain central to the wine’s profile.
The 2019 vintage has been recognised for its balance, freshness, and classical Stellenbosch structure.
Colour:
Deep garnet ruby with excellent colour depth and a youthful edge.
Nose:
Blackcurrant, cassis, and dark cherry aromas are layered with cedarwood, cigar box, graphite, and dried herbs. Subtle notes of cocoa and spice emerge as the wine opens in the glass.
Palate:
Full-bodied and composed, with firm but polished tannins supporting concentrated dark fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon drives the structure, while the supporting varieties contribute texture and aromatic lift. There’s a savoury undertone running through the wine, balanced by fresh acidity and well-integrated oak.
Finish:
Long and structured, finishing with cassis, cedar spice, and lingering earthy complexity.
