Glenelly Estate Reserve Red 2017
Glenelly Estate, perched on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch, was shaped by founder May de Lencquesaing’s vision to bring a Bordeaux sensibility to South African winegrowing. Its flagship Estate Reserve Red 2017 embodies this philosophy - classic structure and elegance united with a distinctive South African twist. Grapes are hand-selected from well-drained soils with cool maritime influence that preserve freshness and depth. Traditional cold soak and extended skin contact draw out concentrated flavour, followed by 18 months’ ageing in French oak barrels to build complexity without dulling varietal character. The result is a richly layered, terroir-driven wine that balances ripe fruit with fine tannins and measured oak influence.
Colour: Deep garnet with youthful ruby edges, showing its concentration and vitality in the glass.
Nose: A layered bouquet of cassis, mulberry and black cherry is joined by cedar, tobacco leaf and sandalwood. With air, mocha, Christmas cake spice and subtle leather notes emerge, creating complexity without heaviness.
Palate: Medium- to full-bodied, the palate is rich yet precise. Dark fruit flavours - blackcurrant, plum and red cherry - are framed by well-integrated tannins and refined acidity. Hints of black pepper spice from Syrah and savoury oak spice enhance the wine’s depth.
Finish: The finish is long and dry, with lingering dark fruit, savoury spice and subtle cedar-wood impressions that carry through with finesse.
- Food Pairing : The structure and depth of Glenelly Estate Reserve Red 2017 make it a stand-out partner for rich, savoury South African and European-inspired dishes. Enjoy it with a slow-roasted lamb shoulder rubbed with rosemary and garlic - the wine’s dark fruit and spice accentuate the roasted flavours. Beef fillet with a red wine reduction or venison medallions with juniper berry jus also work beautifully, as the wine’s firm tannins and freshness balance rich proteins. For cheese lovers, a mature cheddar or aged Gouda brings out the wine’s complex fruit and oak notes while cleansing the palate between sips.
- Drink before: Excellent now through to around 2028 – 2030 with careful ageing; this flagship blend’s structure supports medium-term cellaring.
