Ghost Corner Pinot Noir 2023 (Diners)
Pinot Noir
Description
The Ghost Corner Pinot Noir 2023 is produced by Cederberg Wines, crafted by winemaker David Nieuwoudt from vineyards in the Elim ward near Cape Agulhas, one of the most southerly wine-growing areas in Africa. The Ghost Corner range takes its name from the shipwreck-strewn coastline known locally as “Spookdraai”, where powerful winds and ocean currents have shaped both local folklore and the region’s distinctive maritime climate.
Elim’s proximity to the cold Atlantic Ocean brings strong sea breezes and moderate temperatures, creating ideal conditions for cool-climate varieties like Pinot Noir. These vineyards benefit from limestone-rich soils mixed with slate and gravel, which help retain freshness and minerality in the wines.
For this Pinot Noir, grapes are sourced from carefully selected Elim vineyards and handled gently in the cellar. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel before maturation in a mix of French oak barrels of varying ages, ensuring texture and complexity without overpowering the delicate fruit character typical of Pinot Noir.
The result is a wine that reflects both its maritime terroir and the restrained, elegant style associated with cooler growing regions.
Colour:
Translucent ruby red with bright flashes of garnet, typical of lighter-styled Pinot Noir.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of strawberry compote, cranberries and wild red berries lead the bouquet, followed by savoury hints of cured meat, subtle smokiness and coastal scrub.
Palate:
Medium-bodied and precise, showing fresh red cherry and raspberry flavours supported by gentle oak spice and a faint earthy undertone. The texture is silky, with fine tannins and lively acidity that reflects the cool Elim climate.
Finish:
Elegant and savoury, lingering with subtle earthiness, tea-leaf complexity and a refreshing coastal salinity.

- Food Pairing : The freshness and fine tannin structure of Ghost Corner Pinot Noir 2023 make it particularly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with duck breast or crispy duck pancakes, where the wine’s red fruit lifts the richness of the meat. Roast chicken with herbs or grilled salmon also work well, as the acidity cuts through the natural oils while the delicate oak complements the savoury flavours. For vegetarian dishes, mushroom risotto or roasted aubergine highlights the wine’s earthy undertones, while a tomato and basil pasta brings out the Pinot Noir’s vibrant red fruit character.
