Ernst Gouws & Co Pinotage 2025
Ernst Gouws & Co is a family-owned wine producer based in Stellenbosch, one of South Africa’s best-known wine regions and the birthplace of Pinotage. The Gouws family has been making wine for generations, with the family’s heritage dating back to 1691 and Ernst Gouws himself having travelled to Europe in 1975 to deepen his winemaking knowledge. The producer works with carefully selected, site-specific vineyards around Stellenbosch, where grapes are hand-harvested. Ernst Gouws follows a French-inspired philosophy that places the origin of the grapes and the character of the terroir at the centre of the wine, while the wines themselves are made in a modern, fruit-focused style. Stellenbosch is particularly well suited to Pinotage, helping produce wines with generous fruit, colour and structure. The Ernst Gouws & Co Pinotage 2025 is a straightforward expression of the variety: ripe, generously fruited and warmly spiced, with the familiar South African character of Pinotage presented in an approachable style.
Colour: Deep, bold ruby red.
Nose: Ripe plum and wild berry aromas lead into notes of red and dark berries, cloves, sweet anise and exotic spice. There are also hints of dried pear and baked Christmas cake, adding warmth and complexity to the fruit.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, with ripe plum and berry flavours supported by rounded, ripe tannins. The palate has a generous fruit character, with savoury spice and subtle darker notes adding depth. The tannins provide structure without becoming hard or drying, keeping the wine smooth and accessible.
Finish: Lingering and gently sweet-fruited, with red berry compote, plum and lingering clove and spice notes.
- Food Pairing : The ripe fruit and rounded tannins make this a versatile Pinotage for richly flavoured food. Try it with Cape Malay chicken curry, lamb chops or boerewors from the braai, bobotie, beef or oxtail. Its fruit-forward character works particularly well with aromatic spices, while the tannins provide enough structure for grilled and slow-cooked meats. It can also handle mildly spicy Asian-style dishes, where the wine’s ripe fruit provides a useful contrast to chilli and spice.
