Ernie Els Major Series Merlot 2023

Ernie Els Major Series Merlot 2023 is produced by Ernie Els Wines in Stellenbosch, on the slopes of the Helderberg. Founded by South African golfing legend Ernie Els, the estate was established with a focus on producing wines that can stand alongside respected international examples while retaining a clear sense of South African origin. The Merlot vineyards grow on warm, north-facing slopes at approximately 250 metres above sea level. The cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean helps extend the ripening period, allowing the grapes to develop ripe fruit character while retaining freshness and structure. Winemaker Louis Strydom takes a careful, parcel-by-parcel approach. The grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted before whole berries are fermented in open-top tanks. Gentle pump-overs and punch-downs help extract colour, flavour and tannin, while individual batches are matured separately in French oak for 16 months, with a measured proportion of new barrels. This considered approach gives the wine its combination of ripe fruit, polished texture and subtle oak complexity.

Colour: Deep ruby red with a violet core, showing youthful intensity in the glass. 
Nose: Fragrant aromas of ripe red and black cherries, plum compote and blueberry are complemented by hints of wild raspberry leaf, autumn leaves and subtle savoury earthiness. Gentle oak adds a delicate suggestion of vanilla and spice without overshadowing the fruit. 
Palate: Medium-bodied and elegantly textured, with juicy plum, black cherry and ripe blueberry flavours. Fine, velvety tannins give the wine a smooth feel, while refreshing acidity keeps the generous fruit lively. Subtle notes of vanilla, spice and dark chocolate add depth, resulting in a Merlot that favours finesse and drinkability over sheer weight. 
Finish: Long and fruit-driven, with lingering ripe plum, black cherry and gentle spice. A fresh, savoury edge adds definition to the finish, leaving the palate ready for another sip.
