The Erika O Wines label is the personal project of winemaker Erika Obermeyer, who established her winery in 2016 after gaining experience in both South Africa and France. Working without a single estate base, she sources fruit from carefully selected vineyard sites across the Western Cape, focusing on regions like Groenekloof (Darling) and Stellenbosch where Sauvignon Blanc can express both intensity and finesse.
The Erika O Sauvignon Blanc 2023 reflects this site-driven philosophy. Fruit from cooler, coastal-influenced vineyards benefits from Atlantic breezes, helping to preserve acidity while allowing flavour concentration to build. The style leans towards a more textured, layered Sauvignon Blanc rather than a purely linear, stainless-steel expression.
Winemaking is hands-on but restrained, guided by instinct as much as analysis. The goal is to capture purity of fruit alongside complexity, resulting in a wine that sits comfortably between classic Loire-inspired freshness and a broader, more structured Cape style.
Colour:
Pale straw with a bright green edge, indicating freshness and youth.
Nose:
Lime and gooseberry lead, followed by passion fruit and grapefruit. Subtle floral notes and hints of blackcurrant leaf and fynbos add complexity.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with more weight than a typical Sauvignon Blanc. Layers of citrus and tropical fruit are supported by a gentle textural element, likely from lees contact or partial oak. The acidity is vibrant, giving the wine structure and focus without sharpness.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering citrus, a touch of herbal complexity, and a lightly mineral edge.
