Doolhof Estate Reserve Pinotage 2023
Produced by Doolhof Wine Estate in Wellington, the Doolhof Estate Reserve Pinotage 2023 reflects the unique terroir of a secluded valley framed by the Limietberg, Groenberg and Hawequa mountain ranges. The estate takes its name from the Afrikaans word for "maze", a reference to the rugged landscape shaped by mountain folds, indigenous fynbos and the Kromme River that winds through the property. Doolhof focuses on expressing site and varietal character through careful vineyard management and thoughtful winemaking. The Reserve range highlights the estate's best-performing vineyard blocks, with Pinotage thriving in the warm Wellington climate where ripe fruit concentration is balanced by cooling mountain influences. The result is a wine that showcases the modern face of Pinotage - polished, fruit-driven and refined.
Colour: Deep crimson red with youthful purple highlights and excellent colour intensity.
Nose: Inviting aromas of ripe blackberries, dark plum and black cherry are layered with notes of clove, vanilla and sweet baking spice. Subtle oak nuances add depth without overshadowing the fruit.
Palate: Rich and full-bodied, showing generous flavours of blackberry, mulberry and dark cherry. The texture is supple and vibrant, supported by fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity. Oak maturation contributes hints of vanilla and spice while allowing the fruit purity to remain at the forefront.
Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering dark fruit, gentle spice and polished tannins that leave a savoury impression.
- Food Pairing : Doolhof Estate Reserve Pinotage 2023 is an excellent partner for traditional South African braai fare, particularly flame-grilled lamb chops, beef rump steak and boerewors. The wine's ripe fruit profile and supple tannins also work beautifully with sticky pork ribs, slow-cooked beef brisket or bobotie. Its combination of richness and freshness allows it to complement smoky, savoury flavours while remaining balanced alongside richly flavoured dishes.
