Donkiesbaai Hooiwijn 2024
Chenin Blanc
Description
The Donkiesbaai range is produced by the team behind Rust en Vrede, led by Jean Engelbrecht, and draws inspiration from the Engelbrecht family’s long connection to the rugged West Coast fishing village of Donkiesbaai. The wines celebrate the simple pleasures of that coastline - fresh seafood, open skies and a relaxed approach to life.
While the name reflects the West Coast, the grapes come from dry-land farmed bush vines in Piekenierskloof, an elevated region known for its deep sandy soils and warm days balanced by cooling evening winds. These conditions allow Chenin Blanc to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity.
For the Donkiesbaai Hooiwijn 2024, grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and laid out on straw mats for around three weeks to naturally dehydrate. This traditional “straw wine” method concentrates both sugars and flavour. The wine is then barrel fermented and matured for several months in seasoned French oak before bottling, resulting in a richly textured yet balanced dessert wine produced in very limited quantities.
Colour:
Luminous pale gold, dense and glossy in the glass.
Nose:
Expressive aromas of dried apricot, mango and candied pineapple lead the bouquet, with notes of honeycomb, jasmine and gentle baking spice adding depth.
Palate:
Silky and concentrated, with flavours of glazed apricot, candied citrus, bruised apple and roasted almonds. The sweetness is lifted by vibrant acidity, giving the wine definition and freshness despite its richness.
Finish:
Long and lingering, leaving impressions of dried apricot, marmalade and a delicate touch of straw and spice.

Donkiesbaai Hooiwijn 2024
- Food Pairing : The richness and bright acidity of Donkiesbaai Hooiwijn 2024 make it a versatile dessert wine at the table. It pairs beautifully with baked cheesecake or apricot tart, where the wine echoes the stone-fruit flavours in the dessert. Blue cheeses such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort are also excellent matches, the wine’s sweetness balancing the saltiness and intensity of the cheese. For a simple finish to a meal, try it with almond biscotti or poached pears - dishes where the wine’s honeyed fruit and gentle spice can shine without overwhelming the palate.
