Donkiesbaai Cinsault 2024
Donkiesbaai is a small, site-driven project led by Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede Estate, created to explore vineyard sites and varieties beyond the estate’s traditional Stellenbosch base.
The Cinsault is sourced from old bush vines in Piekenierskloof, a high-altitude region known for its dryland vineyards and sandy soils. These conditions encourage low yields and concentrated berries, while the elevation helps retain natural acidity and freshness.
Winemaking is deliberately restrained, with gentle extraction and maturation in neutral vessels or older oak to preserve the clarity of fruit. The result is a modern, lighter-style red that focuses on finesse, texture, and drinkability rather than weight or power.
Colour:
Bright ruby with a light, translucent edge.
Nose:
Lifted aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and cranberry, with floral hints and a touch of fynbos. Subtle spice and earthy undertones add quiet complexity.
Palate:
Light- to medium-bodied with a silky, refined texture. The fruit profile is fresh and precise, supported by vibrant acidity and fine, almost chalky tannins. There’s a gentle savoury note that adds depth without heaviness.
Finish:
Clean and persistent, with lingering red fruit and a delicate herbal lift.
- Food Pairing : Donkiesbaai Cinsault 2024 is well suited to relaxed, flavourful dishes where freshness matters as much as richness. It pairs naturally with roast chicken, grilled pork, or duck, where the wine’s acidity balances the fat and enhances savoury flavours. It also works well with tomato-based dishes, mushroom risotto, or roasted vegetables, as its subtle earthiness complements these ingredients. Slightly chilled, it’s an excellent partner to charcuterie or lighter braai options, making it a versatile choice for everyday drinking.
