Donkiesbaai Cinsault 2023
Donkiesbaai is a small, site-driven project led by Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede Estate, created to explore varieties and vineyard sites beyond the estate’s traditional Stellenbosch focus.
The Cinsault is sourced from old bush vines in Piekenierskloof - a high-altitude, dry-farmed region known for producing fruit with natural concentration and freshness. The combination of sandy soils and elevation allows for slower ripening, resulting in wines that favour balance and clarity over weight.
In the cellar, the approach is intentionally restrained, with gentle extraction and the use of neutral vessels or older oak to preserve the purity of the fruit. The style is contemporary and food-focused, offering a lighter, more nuanced expression of Cinsault while still grounded in structure and place.
Colour:
Bright ruby with a translucent, youthful edge.
Nose:
Red cherry and raspberry lead, followed by lifted floral notes and a touch of fynbos. Subtle hints of spice and earth add quiet complexity.
Palate:Light- to medium-bodied with a silky, refined texture. The fruit is fresh and precise, supported by lively acidity and fine, powdery tannins. There’s a gentle savoury character that adds depth without heaviness.
Finish:
Clean and persistent, with lingering red fruit and a delicate herbal note.
- Food Pairing : Donkiesbaai Cinsault 2023 is particularly versatile at the table, thanks to its freshness and lighter structure. It pairs well with roast chicken, duck, or pork, where the wine’s acidity balances richness without overwhelming the dish. It also works beautifully with tomato-based meals like pasta or braised dishes, as well as mushroom risotto or grilled vegetables, where its subtle earthiness comes through. Slightly chilled, it’s an excellent companion to charcuterie or a relaxed braai, making it an easy, adaptable choice for everyday drinking.
