De Meye Raised by Rain 2021
De Meye Estate lies in Muldersvlei, north of Stellenbosch, in the Greater Simonsberg area. The 100-hectare family farm has been worked by the Myburgh family for five generations, with the vineyards benefiting from a Mediterranean climate, around 650mm of annual rainfall and cooling westerly winds during the ripening season. The vines face south-east, helping to moderate the warmth and support steady, balanced ripening. The De Meye approach is hands-on and deliberately uncomplicated. All the grapes are grown on the farm, with fruit hand-picked and hand-sorted before making its way into the cellar. The estate describes its current philosophy as minimal-intervention winemaking, with the focus firmly on expressing the character of the vineyard and the vintage rather than imposing a heavy winemaking style.
Colour: Deep ruby red with youthful purple highlights.
Nose: Red berries lead the way, with aromas of ripe cherry and raspberry followed by gentle floral notes and a subtle layer of warm spice.
Palate: Medium-bodied and graceful, with ripe red-fruit flavours supported by fresh acidity. The Merlot brings softness and rounded fruit, while Cabernet Franc contributes definition and a gentle savoury edge. Fine, chalky tannins give the wine shape without making it feel heavy, resulting in an approachable, food-friendly red.
Finish: Long and smooth, with lingering red fruit, delicate spice and a pleasingly dry, velvety finish.
- Food Pairing : The medium body, fresh acidity and fine tannins make De Meye Raised by Rain 2021 particularly versatile at the table. Try it with herb-crusted lamb chops, roast chicken with herbs, grilled steak, mushroom risotto or roasted vegetables with a little feta. The wine has enough structure for meat but enough freshness to work with earthy vegetables and creamy dishes without becoming heavy. The estate itself recommends herb-crusted lamb chops, roast vegetables, mushroom risotto and grilled duck breast.
