De Krans Vintage Reserve 2018
Port : Vintage
Description
De Krans Wine Cellar is located in the town of Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, a region widely regarded as the heart of South Africa’s port-style wine production. Warm summer days, cool evenings and low rainfall create ideal conditions for cultivating traditional Portuguese grape varieties that thrive in the area’s dry climate and stony soils.
Established as a family-run cellar with roots going back to the late 19th century, De Krans has played an important role in developing South Africa’s modern port-style wines. Portuguese varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz were planted here from the late 1970s, and the estate has since built a reputation for structured, age-worthy fortified wines.
De Krans Vintage Reserve 2018 is produced from carefully selected vineyard blocks and harvested at high ripeness before fermentation is halted with the addition of grape spirit. The wine is then matured in large vats and seasoned oak barrels before bottling, allowing it to develop depth while retaining the rich fruit character typical of the Cape Vintage style.
Colour:
Deep ruby-black with a dark plum rim, dense and opaque in the glass.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of ripe blackberry, dark cherry and plum lead the bouquet, followed by violets, liquorice, dark chocolate and subtle spice.
Palate:
Full-bodied and rich with concentrated flavours of blackcurrant, mulberry and stewed plum. The sweetness is balanced by fresh acidity and firm, structured tannins, giving the wine weight without heaviness.
Finish:
Long and warming, with lingering dark fruit, cocoa and spice notes.

De Krans Vintage Reserve 2018
- Food Pairing : The richness and structure of De Krans Vintage Reserve 2018 make it well suited to bold flavours. It pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses such as aged cheddar or Boerenkaas, where the wine’s sweetness balances the savoury intensity of the cheese. Dark chocolate desserts — particularly flourless chocolate cake or chocolate torte — highlight the wine’s cocoa and dark fruit notes. For savoury dishes, try it with venison pie or slow-braised Karoo lamb, where the wine’s sweetness and alcohol complement the richness of the meat while its tannins add structure.
