De Krans, in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, is one of South Africa’s best-known producers of Portuguese grape varieties and Cape Port–style wines. Warm, dry summers and rocky, well-drained soils give small crops of intensely flavoured fruit – ideal for fortifieds. The team leans on decades of experience with Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional and other Port grapes, aiming for wines that balance sweetness, spirit and genuine complexity. De Krans Cape Tawny is made in a classic oxidative style: fortified young, then matured for years in old barrels to develop nutty, caramel and spice notes while the colour fades to amber. It’s a South African take on traditional Tawny Port – generous and sun-soaked, but crafted with a clear eye on balance and drinkability.
Colour:
Deep amber to burnt orange with a tawny rim and clear, bright core, showing extended barrel ageing.
Nose:
Dried fig, raisin and sultana lead, followed by caramel, toffee and roasted nuts. Secondary notes of orange peel, baking spice (cinnamon, clove), a hint of coffee and a touch of vanilla add richness and depth.
Palate:
Full-bodied and mouth-coating, with a silky, slightly viscous texture. Sweet flavours of caramel, butterscotch, dates and dried apricot are balanced by gentle acidity and the warmth of the grape spirit. Nutty, walnut-like notes and a touch of espresso or dark chocolate bring savoury contrast, so the wine feels indulgent but not cloying. The overall impression is rich, comforting and very crowd-friendly.
Finish:
Long, warming and sweet, with lingering caramel, toasted nuts, dried fruit and a gentle spicy glow from the spirit.
