Darling Cellars Old Tractor Pinotage 2024
Darling Cellars is situated on South Africa's West Coast in the Darling wine region, where cooling Atlantic Ocean breezes help moderate the warm summer climate. This unique combination of sunshine, maritime influence and ancient decomposed granite soils allows grapes to ripen fully while retaining freshness and structure. The Old Tractor range forms part of Darling Cellars' Heritage Collection, celebrating stories and landmarks from the region's past. Fruit for the Darling Cellars Old Tractor Pinotage 2024 comes from dryland bush vines with deep root systems that draw character from the region's ancient soils. Traditional open-tank fermentation, followed by 18 months of maturation in a combination of French and American oak barrels, adds complexity and texture while allowing the distinctive Darling terroir to shine through.
Colour: Deep ruby red with a dense, youthful core and vibrant garnet edges.
Nose: Ripe plum and dark berry aromas lead the way, supported by notes of black cherry, forest floor and subtle toasted oak. Hints of spice and savoury complexity emerge with time in the glass.
Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated, showing layers of plum, blackberry and dark berry fruit. Fine-grained tannins provide structure, while integrated oak contributes notes of vanilla, spice and gentle toast. The texture is smooth and rounded, with impressive depth and richness.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering dark fruit, savoury spice and well-integrated oak character.
- Food Pairing : The richness and structure of Darling Cellars Old Tractor Pinotage 2024 make it particularly well suited to hearty South African dishes. Try it with slow-cooked beef casserole, flame-grilled lamb chops, venison pie or a braaied lamb shoulder. The wine's ripe fruit profile complements the savoury depth of these dishes, while its firm tannin structure and fresh acidity help balance richer flavours. It is equally enjoyable alongside a beef bolognese or smoky barbecue dishes where the oak-derived spice echoes the charred flavours from the grill.
