Carmen Stevens Petrichor 2022
Carmen Stevens Wines was founded by one of South Africa’s first qualified female winemakers, with a philosophy centred on expressive, site-driven wines made with precision and restraint. Working primarily with Stellenbosch fruit, Carmen Stevens has built a reputation for producing wines that combine concentration with accessibility, favouring balance and vineyard character over excessive oak or extraction.
Petrichor 2022 takes its name from the earthy scent released after rainfall, a fitting reference to the wine’s layered, grounded character. The blend draws on classic Bordeaux varieties sourced from carefully selected Stellenbosch vineyards, where decomposed granite soils and maritime influence help preserve freshness alongside ripeness. Individual vineyard parcels were vinified separately before maturation in French oak, allowing each component to contribute structure, fruit depth and aromatic complexity to the final blend.
Colour:
Deep garnet with a dense ruby centre and youthful vibrancy.
Nose:
Blackcurrant, dark plum and blackberry aromas are layered with cedar, graphite and dried herbs. Notes of cocoa, tobacco leaf and earthy spice add depth, while subtle floral lift keeps the nose fresh and expressive.
Palate:
Full-bodied and polished, with concentrated dark berry fruit supported by fine tannins and balanced acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and cassis character, while Merlot softens the mid-palate with plush texture. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot add savoury detail and aromatic lift, creating a wine that feels layered and composed rather than heavy.
Finish:
Long and savoury, with lingering black fruit, cedar spice and earthy minerality.
- Food Pairing : Carmen Stevens Petrichor 2022 pairs particularly well with richly flavoured dishes that can match its depth and structure. Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, beef fillet with pepper sauce or smoky braaied steaks all complement the wine’s dark fruit and savoury spice character. The freshness and fine tannins also allow it to work well with mushroom risotto, roasted aubergine or hard cheeses, where earthy flavours echo the wine’s layered complexity without making the pairing feel overly heavy.
