Cape of Good Hope Basson Pinotage 2018
The Cape of Good Hope Basson Pinotage 2018 forms part of the Cape of Good Hope range from Anthonij Rupert Wines, a collection dedicated to showcasing exceptional vineyard sites across South Africa. The project focuses particularly on older vineyards whose low yields and deep-rooted vines offer distinctive character and concentration.
The fruit for this wine comes from old bush vines planted in 1956 on the Paardeberg in the Swartland, one of the Cape’s most respected granite-based terroirs. These vineyards are farmed by the Basson family of Nooitgedacht, whose long stewardship of the site has helped preserve vines that naturally produce small crops and concentrated fruit. The high altitude, dry conditions and lack of irrigation all contribute to the wine’s depth and structure.
In the cellar, grapes are hand-sorted and fermented in small open-top stainless-steel tanks before undergoing malolactic fermentation in cement. The wine matures for around 14 months in second- and third-fill French oak, followed by extended bottle ageing prior to release, allowing the fruit purity and savoury complexity of Paardeberg Pinotage to develop naturally.
Colour:
Deep ruby with garnet depth, showing both maturity and concentration.
Nose:
Raspberry and ripe cherry lead the aromatics, supported by darker notes of plum. Gentle baking spice and subtle Christmas cake nuances emerge with time in the glass, alongside hints of leather and savoury complexity.
Palate:
Medium- to full-bodied with succulent red and dark fruit flavours - plum, cherry and raspberry - layered with soft spice and a touch of savoury smokiness. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, giving the wine structure while allowing the fruit to remain expressive.
Finish:
Long and gently dry, with lingering berry fruit and subtle oak spice that adds depth without overwhelming the wine’s natural fruit character.
- Food Pairing : The structure and fruit profile of Cape of Good Hope Basson Pinotage 2018 make it particularly well suited to flavourful, slightly smoky dishes. A traditional South African braai - especially grilled lamb chops or boerewors - works beautifully, as the wine’s ripe berry fruit softens the charred savoury edges of the meat. Slow-roasted pork shoulder with spices or sticky barbecue glaze also complements the wine’s plum and baking-spice notes. For something more rustic, a rich beef potjie or mushroom and lentil stew pairs well with the wine’s smooth tannins and gentle smokiness, while mature cheeses such as aged cheddar or gouda highlight its savoury complexity.
