The Buitenverwachting 7-Year-Old Single Malt Red Wine Finish is a collaboration that brings together two distinctive Cape traditions: whisky distilling and historic wine estates. The whisky originates from the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, South Africa’s only commercial whisky distillery and the home of Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky.
After its initial maturation, the whisky undergoes a finishing period in red wine casks from Buitenverwachting Estate, one of the most historic wine farms in Constantia, dating back to the original Constantia estate established in the late 1600s. The finishing process allows the whisky to absorb subtle influences from the wine barrels, adding layers of fruit and spice to the spirit’s underlying malt character.
This type of cask finishing reflects a growing trend in South African whisky - using the country’s strong wine heritage to introduce distinctive flavours and a uniquely local character.
Appearance:
Warm amber with copper highlights.
Nose:
Aromas of ripe red berries and plum mingle with toasted oak, vanilla and soft malt sweetness.
Palate:
Medium-bodied with flavours of caramel, dark fruit and baking spice. The red wine cask influence introduces subtle notes of blackberry and cherry layered over a smooth malt backbone.
Finish:
Smooth and warming with lingering oak spice and a gentle red-fruit sweetness.
