Boplaas Gamka 2020
Boplaas Family Vineyards in Calitzdorp has become one of South Africa’s most respected producers of wines from Portuguese grape varieties. The farm, established in the late 1800s and now run by the Nel family, lies in the Klein Karoo at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains - a warm, dry region where hardy Portuguese cultivars such as Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca thrive.
The Boplaas Gamka 2020 is a flagship Cape Portuguese blend created by winemaker Carel Nel together with Margaux Nel. Named after the Gamka River - a vital water source for the region whose name translates to “lion” in Khoisan - the wine reflects both the rugged landscape and the estate’s long connection to it.
Fruit from low-yielding old vines is hand-harvested and fermented in traditional open fermenters (lagars) with manual punch-downs to gently extract colour and flavour. The wine is then matured for around 12 months in French oak barrels, allowing the powerful Portuguese varieties to integrate with subtle oak complexity before bottling.
Colour:
Deep garnet with a dense ruby core, suggesting concentration and structure.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of ripe plum, blackberry and dark cherry lead the bouquet. These are joined by notes of cranberry, fynbos, spice and subtle savoury hints reminiscent of charcuterie.
Palate:
Full-bodied and structured, showing rich dark berry fruit supported by firm yet refined tannins. Touriga Nacional contributes aromatic intensity and depth, while Tinta Barocca and Shiraz add texture, spice and savoury complexity.
Finish:
Long and savoury with lingering black fruit, spice and a subtle herbal edge.
- Food Pairing : The bold structure and savoury character of Boplaas Gamka 2020 make it an excellent partner for hearty dishes. Slow-braised lamb shanks or Karoo lamb with rosemary work particularly well, as the wine’s dark fruit and spice complement the richness of the meat. Game dishes such as venison pie echo the wine’s depth and herbal notes, while charcuterie or mature cheeses highlight its savoury complexity. It also pairs naturally with rustic braai fare, where the wine’s firm tannins and generous fruit stand up well to smoky flavours.
