Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2020
Port : Ruby
Description
Boplaas Family Vineyards, located in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s leading producers of Cape fortified wines. The Nel family has been farming and producing wine on the property for generations, developing a reputation for working with traditional Portuguese grape varieties particularly well suited to the warm, dry conditions of the region.
Calitzdorp’s climate, characterised by hot days, cool nights and low rainfall, allows grapes such as Touriga Nacional and Tinta Barocca to ripen fully while retaining structure. The Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2020 is produced using traditional port-style methods: hand-harvested grapes are fermented in open lagares with manual pigeage before the ferment is arrested by the addition of grape spirit. The wine is then matured in oak barrels before bottling unfined and unfiltered, allowing it to develop further complexity with long-term cellaring.
Colour:
Inky black with deep purple tones and a vibrant garnet rim.
Nose:
Aromatic layers of blackberry, tart cranberry and dark plum rise from the glass, accompanied by floral hints of violet, fynbos and warming all-spice.
Palate:
Full-bodied and intense, with concentrated red and black fruit supported by firm tannins. Notes of liquorice, dark chocolate and spice add depth while the fortified structure provides richness and power.
Finish:
Long and structured, with lingering dark fruit, cocoa and savoury spice that promise further complexity with age.

Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2020
- Food Pairing : The richness and structure of Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2020 make it a natural partner for bold, savoury flavours. It pairs particularly well with venison, slow-braised beef or game dishes, where the wine’s tannins and fruit intensity complement the richness of the meat. Aged cheeses such as mature cheddar or blue cheese work beautifully with the wine’s sweetness and structure. For dessert, dark chocolate, dried figs or nut-based pastries highlight the wine’s cocoa and spice notes while balancing its concentrated fruit character.
