Boplaas Cape Vintage Port 2024

Boplaas Family Vineyards is a historic family-owned farm in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, with a winemaking and distilling heritage dating back to 1880. The region's hot, dry climate and distinctive soils are particularly well suited to Portuguese grape varieties, which have become a defining part of Boplaas's identity. The Cape Vintage Port 2024 is made in the traditional Portuguese style, using Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão. The grapes are harvested at full ripeness, fermented in traditional open lagares with intensive manual pigeage, then fortified with grape spirit at the appropriate point in fermentation. The wine spends 12 months ageing in Portuguese oak pipes before bottling, allowing the generous fruit, spice and tannins to come together. The Tinta Barocca component includes fruit from old vines planted in 1968, adding depth to the blend.

Colour: Deep purplish-black with an intense, youthful colour.
Nose: Ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry lead the aromas, followed by violets, pepper and warming spice. Subtle dark-chocolate notes add richness and complexity.
Palate: Full-bodied and generously sweet, with concentrated cherry, plum and blackberry flavours supported by substantial, ripe tannins. Pepper and spice add savoury lift, while integrated alcohol gives the wine warmth without overwhelming the fruit. Its combination of sweetness, tannin and fruit concentration gives the palate considerable depth.
Finish: Long, rich and luscious, with dark berry fruit, plum, spice and dark chocolate lingering on the palate. The firm tannic structure gives the finish definition and provides the foundation for further bottle development.
