From the Nel family’s historic vineyards in Calitzdorp, Boplaas Cape Vintage 2023 is part of a long tradition of South African fortified wines made in the classic style of Port. Calitzdorp, in the Klein Karoo, offers hot days, cool nights and ancient, well-drained soils that help Portuguese-heritage varieties like Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão reach full ripeness with concentrated flavours. Boplaas embraces traditional methods - fermenting in open lagares with manual pigeage and fortifying at the optimal moment with quality grape spirit - followed by maturation in Portuguese oak pipes to build structure and complexity. The result is a wine that bridges time-honoured technique with the fleshy fruit and warmth characteristic of South African Cape Ports.

Inky purple-black with a deep garnet rim that hints at serious density.
Nose:
Enticing aromas of ripe cherries and plums form the core, joined by blackberry, violet florals, warm spice and subtle dark chocolate notes.
Palate:
Full-bodied and luscious, the palate opens with concentrated black fruit and cherry layers, followed by peppery warmth and violet nuances. Tannins are ripe yet supportive, balanced by a generous sweetness that’s integrated with the wine’s fortification.
Finish:
Long, rich and indulgent, with lingering dark fruit, spice and a touch of oak-derived complexity.
